The pathway

Study to PR pathway in Australia

Australia is one of the few countries where the course you enrol in is also your migration strategy. Done right, a student arrives at 45 points and reaches a competitive 85 within a year of graduating. Done wrong, they leave with a degree and no visa. This is the sequence.

  • Points from study
  • Student → 485 → PR

The short answer

The study to PR pathway in Australia runs student visa (subclass 500) → two-academic-year qualification in a nominated occupation → Temporary Graduate visa (485) → skills assessment and one year of skilled work → Expression of Interest for the 189, 190 or 491 → permanent residence, or the 491 followed by the 191 after three years. Australian study earns 5 to 20 points before any work experience, and regional study earns 5 more plus easier 491 nomination. Most successful pathways take three to five years from arrival.

The pathway at a glance

1

Study

Two academic years in a course that maps to a nominated occupation. Regional if PR is the goal.

2

485 visa

Two to three years to work, add points, and get assessed. Lodge the skills assessment in month one.

3

EOI

Lodge in SkillSelect for the 189, 190 and 491 at once. Nomination is where most students get invited.

4

PR

189 or 190 is permanent on grant. The 491 leads to the 191 after three years regional.

The sequence, step by step

  1. Before enrolling: fix the occupation. Confirm it is on the MLTSSL, STSOL or ROL, which states nominate it, and what the assessing authority accepts. The PR Check Tool and best courses guide do this.
  2. Choose city and course together. A two-year course, ideally regional. See universities and courses.
  3. During study: build the file. Field-related casual work, superior English attempts, a partner skills assessment if applicable. See study and work.
  4. Final semester: prepare the 485. English test within 12 months, AFP check, application within six months of completion. See the post-study work visa guide.
  5. 485 month 1: lodge the skills assessment. ACS, Engineers Australia, ANMAC, VETASSESS or TRA, plus a Professional Year for accounting, ICT and engineering.
  6. 485 month 6–12: lodge the EOI for 189, 190 and 491 simultaneously, and apply for state nomination where your occupation is open.
  7. Invitation and grant. 189 and 190 are permanent. The 491 requires three years in a regional area with income above the threshold before the 191.

Why the regional pathway wins for most students

Regional Australia for migration is everywhere except Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, so Adelaide, Perth, Canberra, Hobart, Darwin and the Gold Coast all count. Regional study is worth 5 points, a longer 485, and access to 491 nomination programs that are less contested than capital-city 190 streams. A graduate at 70 points in Sydney is stuck; the same graduate in Adelaide is at 75 with a 491 nomination pending that takes them to 90. The nomination itself is the biggest single lever on the test, and regional graduates get it first.

Mistakes that break the pathway

Common questions

Study to PR pathway FAQ

Can I get PR in Australia after studying?

Yes, through the skilled migration program. Study in a nominated occupation earns 5 to 20 points, the 485 visa gives two to three years to add experience and nomination, and the 189, 190 or 491 leads to permanent residence. Most successful pathways take three to five years from arrival.

Which course gives PR in Australia?

No course guarantees PR. Courses that lead to occupations with active nomination, such as nursing, early childhood teaching, social work, engineering, IT and the construction trades, give the strongest pathways.

How many points do I need for PR after studying in Australia?

65 is the minimum to lodge. Competitive scores in 2026 are around 85 for the 190 and 491 and higher for the 189 in high-volume occupations. A regional graduate with nomination reaches 85 to 90 without work experience.

Is regional study better for PR?

For most students, yes. It earns 5 extra points, a longer post-study work visa, and access to 491 nomination, which is worth 15 points and is less contested than capital-city 190 streams.

How long does the study to PR pathway take?

Typically two to three years of study, then one to two years on the 485 before invitation. The 189 and 190 are permanent on grant; the 491 requires a further three years before the 191.
