Ranked by outcome
"Best" means different things. We rank by the three outcomes international students actually want: a job at the end, a salary that covers the cost, and a realistic pathway to permanent residence.

The strongest courses for international students in Australia in 2026 are nursing, early childhood education, social work, civil and electrical engineering, software and cyber security, accounting (with a Professional Year), and the construction, automotive and cookery trades. Each leads to an occupation on the skilled lists with active state nomination. The weakest are generic business, marketing and hospitality management degrees that do not map to a nominated occupation.
| Course | Occupation | Assessing body | PR pathway strength | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Nursing | Registered Nurse | ANMAC | Very strong | Every state nominates; 189 invitations continue; regional hospitals recruit direct |
| Early Childhood Education | Early Childhood Teacher | AITSL | Very strong | Chronic shortage; strong 190 and 491 nominations |
| Social Work | Social Worker | AASW | Very strong | Small cohort, high demand, priority processing in several states |
| Civil / Electrical / Mechanical Engineering | Engineer | Engineers Australia | Strong | Infrastructure pipeline; regional demand |
| IT — software, cyber, data | Software Engineer, ICT Security Specialist | ACS | Strong but competitive | High volume of applicants; superior English and PY matter |
| Cert III/IV Trades — carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive | Tradesperson | TRA | Strong regionally | Job-ready pathways; 491 nominations in every state |
| Commercial Cookery + Hospitality Management | Chef / Cook | TRA | Moderate to strong | Regional demand; needs the 2-year package |
| Accounting | Accountant | CPA / CA ANZ / IPA | Moderate | High competition; Professional Year and superior English are near-mandatory |
| Aged Care / Disability | Aged or Disabled Carer | VETASSESS | Moderate, growing | New employer-sponsored routes; regional nominations |
| Medical laboratory / Physiotherapy / OT | Allied health | AIMS / APC / OTC | Very strong | Limited seats but almost guaranteed nomination |

Nursing is the single most reliable study-to-PR route in Australia. A three-year Bachelor of Nursing (or a two-year graduate-entry masters for students with a health background) leads to AHPRA registration, an ANMAC skills assessment, and an occupation that every state and territory nominates. Regional hospitals actively recruit graduates, and a nursing graduate in Adelaide or Hobart can realistically reach 85+ points within a year of finishing. Entry requires IELTS 7.0 in each band for registration, which is the main barrier. Physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical laboratory science and radiography have smaller cohorts and similarly strong outcomes.
IT remains the highest-volume field for Indian and Nepali students, and that volume is the problem: the 189 cut-off for ICT occupations is among the highest in the program. A two-year ACS-accredited masters is still a sound choice, but plan from the start for superior English, a Professional Year, and a regional 491. Cyber security and data science have slightly less competition than generic software engineering. Engineering has a stronger outlook: infrastructure spending is high, Engineers Australia assessment is straightforward for accredited degrees, and civil and electrical engineers are nominated widely.
Australia is short of tradespeople, and the VET sector is built to fix it. A Certificate III in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive or refrigeration, packaged to two years, leads to a TRA skills assessment and 491 nominations in every state. Fees are a third of a university degree and graduates earn from day one. The pathway is slower to the 189 but often faster to an actual visa than a business degree in Sydney.
Early childhood teaching is one of the few occupations with genuine shortage in every capital city, not just regionally. A Bachelor or Master of Teaching (Early Childhood) leads to AITSL assessment and priority nomination. Social work is smaller and equally strong. Aged and disability care has moved from a weak pathway to a growing one through the Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement and expanded regional nominations.
Accounting is on the list but crowded. It works when you commit to the full sequence: a CPA-accredited masters, a Professional Year, superior English and a regional plan. Generic MBA, marketing, HR and management degrees do not map to a nominated occupation for most graduates and should be treated as a career choice, not a migration one.
Common questions
Nursing, early childhood teaching, social work, engineering and the construction trades lead. Each maps to an occupation with active state nomination and low enough competition that a graduate can be invited within a year or two of finishing.
Yes, but plan for competition. ICT occupations have high 189 cut-offs, so successful applicants usually add superior English, a Professional Year and a regional 491 nomination.
Nursing and allied health, early childhood and secondary teaching, engineering, construction and electrical trades, cyber security, and aged and disability care.
Rarely. Most MBA graduates cannot obtain a skills assessment in a nominated occupation. It is a career qualification, not a migration one.
IELTS 7.0 in each band (or OET B in each component) for AHPRA registration, which is higher than the student visa requirement of 6.0.
