Points are assessed on the day you are invited, not the day you lodge. That means three clocks are running at once: your age bracket, your English test validity, and your skills assessment expiry. Sequencing those against the invitation trend for your occupation is the part that decides whether a good score turns into a visa, and it is the part a calculator cannot do.

If you are planning to migrate to Australia through a general skilled migration visa, understanding how points are awarded is one of the first steps. The Australia PR points calculator has been strategically designed to help applicants estimate their eligibility for Australia's points-tested visa programs.
ApplyOn offers a free PR points calculator: a mechanism that awards points to candidates depending on factors such as age, English-language proficiency, skilled work experience, partner qualifications, state nomination and other circumstances, to determine their position in relation to skilled migration based on their individual profile. It also provides migration planning tools and personalised guidance to help applicants experience a simple, fast and cost-effective migration solution.
Furthermore, ApplyOn helps applicants understand both primary and alternate visa pathways, such as independent skilled migration and employer-sponsored migration, based on their individual profile and current position.
The Australian Government uses the SkillSelect system for skilled workers who want to express their interest in applying for skilled migration visas, including the Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491), and live and work in Australia. Applicants first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), which is often the pivotal first step in obtaining a PR visa, and points are calculated based on the information provided.
You must have an estimated score of at least 65 points to be invited to apply for a points-tested visa. However, 65 points gets you into the pool, not the visa, and does not guarantee an invitation to apply.
If you are considering Australian immigration, the PR points calculator helps you calculate points for the subclass 189, 190 and 491 visas. It also helps you understand your current score and identify areas where you may be able to increase your points to strengthen your application before proceeding with your EOI.
The Australia PR points calculator is an online calculator that evaluates skilled migrants for permanent residency in Australia. It estimates how many points you may receive under the skilled migration points test based on criteria like age, education, work experience and English proficiency.
Your score is based on several personal and professional factors. These include:
To live, work or study in a country as vast and diverse as Australia, the exact requirements depend on the visa, the occupation you fall under, a skills assessment by the relevant assessing authority, your points score, other eligibility factors, and the rules applicable to your circumstances.
The Department of Home Affairs states that applicants using structured, points-based PR pathways such as the subclass 189, 190 and 491 need to meet or exceed the 65-point threshold to be eligible for an invitation. Meeting the threshold alone does not guarantee an invitation.
ApplyOn pays attention to detail and helps applicants understand their current PR position by assessing their profile, occupation, points, state options and potential visa pathways. Its tools and personalised reports help applicants identify suitable pathways while keeping in mind ever-evolving regulations, compare the subclass 189, 190 and 491, and identify areas for improving their profile.
As an experienced Australian visa and migration specialist, ApplyOn provides guidance on skilled and employer-sponsored PR pathways. Whether you want to pursue a course in Australia or outside Australia, ApplyOn also helps international students align their course choices with PR pathways, using data based on Australian migration and state nomination requirements to help applicants enter Australia through legitimate migration pathways.
The nine categories
The Australia PR points test assesses different aspects of your profile in detail and assigns points according to prescribed criteria. The major categories considered when you calculate Australia PR points are:
Age is one of the first things Australia's points-tested skilled migration system considers. Understanding how age affects your points score helps you set realistic expectations, assess your profile thoroughly, and identify areas where you may be able to claim additional points, such as skilled employment. Younger applicants generally receive more points under the points test.
| 18 to under 25 years | 25 points |
| 25 to under 33 years | 30 points |
| 33 to under 40 years | 25 points |
| 40 to under 45 years | 15 points |
| 45 years or older | 0 points |
When you are embarking on a journey to acquire a points-tested skilled migration visa, English proficiency holds eminent importance in the Australia PR points test. To prove English proficiency, you must take a specified English-language test such as IELTS and achieve the required score for Australian visa purposes. Under the current points test, proficient English earns 10 points and superior English earns 20 points.
| Competent English | 0 points |
| Proficient English | 10 points |
| Superior English | 20 points |
The Department of Home Affairs states that the English language tests approved for proving proficient or superior English changed from 7 August 2025. If you took a test before this date, your result may still be valid as proof of competent English for skilled migration visas.
Your skilled employment history can contribute to your points score, and it is one of the key areas where additional points are realistically achievable. Building experience is not enough on its own; the relevance of that employment matters. The occupation you nominate and the way your employment is assessed must satisfy the applicable requirements. When completing your EOI you set up an account in SkillSelect and provide details of your work history, including your position, employer, professional timeline, and whether the work relates to your nominated occupation.
| Overseas — at least 3 years | 5 points |
| Overseas — at least 5 years | 10 points |
| Overseas — at least 8 years | 15 points |
| In Australia — at least 1 year | 5 points |
| In Australia — at least 3 years | 10 points |
| In Australia — at least 5 years | 15 points |
| In Australia — at least 8 years | 20 points |
Overseas and Australian skilled employment are combined and capped at 20 points in total.
Your educational background is another area of careful assessment under the points test. Depending on your qualifications and additional credentials, points may be available for recognised doctoral, master's, bachelor's and certain other qualifications. Only your highest qualification is counted.
| Doctorate (PhD) | 20 points |
| Bachelor's degree or higher qualification | 15 points |
| Australian diploma | 10 points |
| Australian trade qualification | 10 points |
| Qualification recognised by the relevant assessing authority as suitable for the nominated occupation | 10 points |
Understanding the study requirement for skilled migration is very important for international students. Applicants who have completed a qualification or qualifications in Australia that took at least two academic years of study may receive an additional 5 points for meeting the Australian study requirement. This category is particularly relevant to people who have completed eligible studies in Australia over no less than 16 calendar months while holding a visa authorising them to study.
| Australian study requirement met | 5 points |
An eligible applicant can receive 10 points under this category. It is a strong opportunity for applicants whose Australian educational background falls within the specified science, technology, engineering, mathematics or ICT areas and whose qualification is a research masters or doctorate. The qualification must be eligible and meet the study requirements, so check it against the current official rules before adding the points to your calculation.
| Eligible specialist education qualification | 10 points |
If you are planning to move to Australia, your spouse or de facto partner's circumstances may also affect your points score. Depending on the applicable requirements, applicants can claim an additional 5 to 10 points depending on the partner's age, educational qualification, occupation, English language skills, skills assessment and other criteria.
| Single, or partner is an Australian citizen or permanent resident | 10 points |
| Partner has a suitable skills assessment and competent English | 10 points |
| Partner has competent English only | 5 points |
If your partner does not meet the requirements for partner points, SkillSelect also lets you consider whether your partner has the stronger profile and should be the primary applicant instead. This can avoid a long and complex visa journey.
Being nominated by an Australian state or territory government provides additional points under the relevant pathways. The subclass 190 Skilled Nominated visa requires nomination by a state or territory, allows skilled migrants to live and work in Australia permanently, and provides 5 additional points. Nomination requirements are determined by each state or territory and differ from one jurisdiction to another.
| Subclass 190 state or territory nomination | 5 points |
The subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa is for skilled workers who want to live and work in regional Australia and is granted for up to five years. It was formed by the Australian Government to address skill shortages in regional areas and can involve nomination by a state or territory government or sponsorship by an eligible family member living in a designated regional area.
| Subclass 491 nomination or eligible family sponsorship | 15 points |
Once you have calculated your potential score, the next step is to assess whether you meet the defined eligibility criteria for the skilled migration pathway you are considering and explore relevant career opportunities in Australia.
The Australia PR points test is an important part of the skilled migration process for individuals seeking to live and work in Australia. An appropriate age, strong English skills, world-class education linked to a high-demand occupation, partner circumstances and other eligible factors influence your overall score and make the PR application process easier and more effective.
The calculator helps you understand your potential position and identify areas for improvement, such as demonstrating relevant skills. Even if your score reflects the minimum of 65 points, this does not guarantee an invitation.
For the most accurate result, use the latest information from the Department of Home Affairs and verify your occupation, skills assessment, English-language requirements and nomination conditions before submitting an EOI, while also considering career development opportunities in Australia.
Review each points category carefully. Understand where your current score comes from and whether you may be eligible to claim additional points for skilled occupation, education or other criteria. If areas such as English-language proficiency or eligible skilled employment could significantly improve your score, consider addressing them before you submit your EOI.

Common questions
An Australia PR points calculator is a tool that helps skilled migration applicants estimate their points under Australia's points-tested visa system for visas such as the Skilled Independent (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491). It considers factors such as age, English language proficiency, skilled employment experience, educational qualifications, specialist educational qualifications and other applicable factors.
Points are calculated based on eligibility for Australian skilled migration pathways as specified under the relevant points test. Points are awarded for each factor, such as age, English-language ability, skilled work experience, education, partner skills and other qualifying factors, and added together.
The minimum points threshold for points-tested skilled visas is generally 65 points, but meeting the threshold does not guarantee an invitation to apply. Invitation requirements vary depending on the visa subclass, occupation and other applicable criteria.
Yes. You may be able to increase your score by improving eligible factors such as English language ability, work experience, education, spouse or de facto partner circumstances, or obtaining qualifying Australian education. Because the score required for an invitation varies from round to round, focus on factors you can realistically improve.
The calculator estimates your potential points score based on the information you enter. The result is indicative and is not an official assessment of eligibility. Verify your eligibility and points claims against the latest Department of Home Affairs requirements before submitting an Expression of Interest.
